Skin care in the Winter is among the worst times for that skin to become dry and irritated. The wind and cold weather can enjoy havoc with sensitive skin making dry skin red and tight. The colder it might be outside the more you need to consider changing how you care for your skin.

The nights are attracting, the days getting shorter and summer clothing is starting to get packed away, scarves are earning a come back. Clearly the season take presctiption a cusp and alter is in the air. Soon, the central heating will creak back again and hot/cold temperatures will begin to play havoc on skin.

With winter now well and truely here, it’s time to batten down the hatches with regards to protecting and taking care of our skin. We’ve compiled a summary of the Top 5 Winter Skin Care Tips that will help you do just that.

Moisturise to safeguard

Dry skin is one of the consequences of cold weather, with it comes a duller complexion, which nobody wants. Using a body lotion which contains glycerin and vitamin E helps you to lock moisture in and from the invasive cold winter air, fight signs of ageing by reducing wrinkles and fine lines, and helps rid the skin of poisons. Vitamin E’s anti-inflammatory agents are the perfect skin healers, and just suitable for soothing skin that’s been exposed to the cold winter climate.

Massage

Blood naturally nourishes your skin, but flows less freely when you're cold. Therefore this winter induced poor circulation isn’t great for your skin. A great way to combat this really is with a massage, that can help to improve your body’s circulation. It stimulates blood circulation so that fresh oxygenated blood rushes to each body cell to create a warm, rosy glow towards the skin, helping to keep the skin’s surface healthy.

Eat well

Your lifestyle plays an enormous roll in achieving beautiful skin. There might be a tendency in winter to consume less salad and fruit in return for less nutritious comfort foods. However, you can still eat healthily and feel warm inside. Eat lots of foods containing Ascorbic acid (try red peppers in stir-fries) and Zinc (lentils in soups), because they help the body maintain healthy tissue and therefore are involved in collagen production, protecting cells for free radical damage. Beta carotene (carrots in casseroles or roasted pumpkin) likewise helps repair damage to skin cells.

Hand care

Don’t ever go out with wet hands, as that cold winter chill will quickly leave them chapped and cracked. Be sure you protect the thin layer of skin both hands have against the harsh winter climate by utilizing gloves and a top quality hand cream that’s free of sulphates and parabens, to give the best possible protection.

Hydration

People often drink less water in colder weather since the thought of putting anything cold inside doesn’t appeal. But when you want to maintain a healthy, well nourished glow for the skin, hydration is just as essential in winter as in the summer. Should you don’t fancy water, why not try topping on hot drinks (even cocoa’s a high quality one, as it contains antioxidants). Decaffeinated herb teas are the best for keeping your fluid levels up. Warm water

Now we’ve all experienced those cold mornings when all that's necessary to do is crawl right into a scalding hot shower. From time to time, maybe. But, if you’re carrying this out regularly you will be dehydrating your skin regularly and robbing it of their goodness. You don’t need to steam yourself to have a shower, warm water may be the way forward. You can also use a moisturiser after showering to assist lock in that moisture before towelling off.
